He had a deep humanistic background and his studies are the work of an outsider, an independent mind apart from the most important methodological fashions of the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His famous phrase: The Medium Is the Message, became an indispensable reference to understand the effects of mass communication, which, as you should already know, is a form of mediated communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our goal in this lecture is to understand what the author meant with this phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McLuhan was always a controversial figure in the academic world who was not shy to use the media himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here you can see the author in a cameo role in Woody Allen\u2019s film Annie Hall:<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Woody Allen meets Marshall McLuhan\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sXJ8tKRlW3E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man (1964), the book we will discuss here, another important works of the author are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of the Typographic Man (1962)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>War and Peace in the Global Village (1968)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In this <a href=\"https:\/\/431.jcdelama.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/McLuhan_UM.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a>, you can download the whole book. According to the author, media are a form of technology, and such, could be considered an extension of man (of the human being).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How can media (mass or any other kind of communication medium) be considered an extension of man?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give examples.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Electricity as a Medium<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the difficulties of understanding Marshall McLuhan is that he uses the most unusual examples to explain his ideas.
